Jernigan. FROM THE PRAIRIE SCHOONER TO A CITY FLAT By Charles Brougher Jernigan INTRODUCTION It is a far cry from the Texas plains to the world's metropolis; from the prairie schooner to the subway trains; from the log cabin of the western pioneer to Gotham flats. It is as far as the East is.

The prairie schooner was smaller and lighter than the Conestoga wagon—which at the time was popular in the eastern United States for hauling freight—and therefore was more suitable for long-distance travel.

Unlike the Conestoga, which had a body that angled up at each end and prevented cargo from tipping or falling out, the prairie schooner had a flat horizontal body.

The Raz-Shumaker Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction for goes to Megan Cummins for her manuscript "If the Body Allows It," chosen by guest-judges Timothy Schaffert and Xu Xi with Editor-in-Chief Kwame Dawes. Cummins is a writer and editor living in Brooklyn.

Her work has appeared in A Public Space, One Teen Story, Guernica, Ninth Letter, and elsewhere. Prairie Schooner is a literary magazine published quarterly at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with the cooperation of UNL's English Department and the University of Nebraska is based in Lincoln, Nebraska and was first published in Founded by Lowry Wimberly and a small group of his students, who together formed the Wordsmith Chapter of Sigma Upsilon (a national honorary.

The Prairie Schooner. The Conestoga was a unique type of wagon originally made in the Conestoga Valley of Pennsylvania by fine German craftsmen. The body of the wagon was curved up high at each end to keep the contents inside from sliding around.

Winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry, Susan Gubernat’s The Zoo at Night reflects with subtle craft on the dark side of love, death, the family romance, carnality, and lofty aspirations.

She thinks of her poems as “night thoughts” resembling nocturnes, in which “a bit of light leaks in.” Both experimental and classic, Gubernat’s poems combine formal and free verse. The Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Fiction for goes to Liz Breazeale for her manuscript "Extinction Events," chosen by guest-judges Bernice McFadden and Jack Driscoll with Editor-in-Chief Kwame Dawes.
